Fillings at Inverurie Smile Care

What are fillings?

Fillings serve to treat cavities (holes) in teeth. Either amalgam (silver coloured metal) or composite (white, synthetic resin) fillings are used to fill cavities in the teeth. Only amalgam fillings are available under the NHS, unless the filling is used to treat cavities on front teeth, when white fillings will be used and available under the NHS. Examples of costs for some types of NHS treatment are available here. Fees are as of 1st Nov 2019. Please note that NHS fee structure is complex and varies considerably from patient to patient depending of the treatment required. These amalgam fillings are a silver colour and are visible on the teeth.

We also offer white fillings, matching the colour of your teeth. However, these are not available under the NHS on molar teeth.

What is a cavity?

A cavity is caused by decay in your tooth. Often, you may not feel the cavity, there might not be any pain. However, cavities need to be treated as they will become larger, will cause pain and lead to further complications which can require extensive treatment. If bacteria enters the tooth via the cavity, it can cause pain and infection. This is prevented by filling it in with amalgam or white fillings. If a cavity stays untreated for a long time and becomes bigger, you may require root canal treatment or extraction of the tooth.
